Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007 (ILM) replaced Microsoft Identity Information Server 2003 (MIIS).  ILM is primarily used to automate the creation and synchronisation of user accounts between systems, either within a network or with external organisations. Once an identity is managed and being synchronised to another system, ILM has the ability to capture password change events and send the new password to the other systems as well. This enables users to use a single username and password across many systems within and outside your organisation.

Microsoft relied heavily on ILM with the introduction of Outlook Live, the precursor to Office 365. Outlook Live allowed identities to be created through a web service directly from an organisation's active directory using an implementation of ILM. This also took advantage of the PCNS or Password Change Notification Service to synchronise passwords between the organisation's active directory and the cloud service, Outlook Live.

With an extensive background in large organisations, Business Mechanix has deployed Identity Management solutions touching hundreds of thousands of people. At Victoria University in Wellington, Business Mechanix implemented ILM to process more than 45,000 user accounts connecting their Active Directory and Microsoft’s cloud services including password synchronisation. The Correspondence School was an early adopter of Microsoft Live@EDU and Business Mechanix designed and installed ILM to provision students with a mailbox. Lincoln University used Business Mechanix' in-depth knowledge of Microsoft ILM along with comprehensive understanding of university systems to implement a solution around ILM and Outlook Live which also included single sign-on with their learning management platform with complex security protocols.
