Forefront Identity Manager 2010 (FIM) replaces Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007 (ILM) which replaced Microsoft Identity Information Server 2003 (MIIS).
FIM is primarily used to automate the creation and synchronisation of user accounts between systems, either within a network or with external organisations. Once an identity is managed and being synchronised to another system, FIM has the ability to capture password change events and send the new password to the other systems as well. This enables users to use a single username and password across many systems within and outside your organisation.
FIM includes new features that weren’t available with ILM or MIIS such as the introduction of the FIM Portal, management of group memberships and a password reset portal.

Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) had attempted to implement FIM on their own before getting help from Business Mechanix. EIT has a fully automated user creation and identity management process saving IT staff many hours of processing time.
The University of Waikato enlisted Business Mechanix’ help for their Identity Management Solution. This involved a full review and restructure of their Active Directory, replacement of their user access request management tool and the automation of the creation, modification and removal of accounts and access. Key features gained for the university are the full audit control of all changes to identity, the ability to see the access applied to a user at any time historically, and a fully auditable workflow process for approvals of access to systems and services.
